Notched dog tags

Some of you may have seen old dog tags with notches in them. Stories abound about the reason for them. The oddest being that the notch would hold the dog tag in place as it was placed in between a deceased soldiers teeth on the battlefield. The jaw would be forced shut around the tag and positive ID would remain securely on the body. The simple truth is that early dog tag machines needed this notch to hold the tag in place as the letters were being stamped. Holders were developed in later models that allowed the tag to be held without needing a notch in the tag.

The future of dog tags

Dog tags of the future will hardly resemble those of today. New technology is already being used by the armed forces to track an injured soldiers medical information. Software called BMIST (Battlefield Medical Information System-Tactical) can be used to track the soldiers medical care in a combat zone and then be accessed by hospital staff while the soldier is enroute. Wireless data devices similar to dog tags are being tested as a means to store gigabytes worth of data. Certainly much more than the name, SSN, blood type and religion information used for current dog tags. Who knows if the stainless steel tags will ever be completely replaced though. They have proven rugged, dependable and there are no sensitive electronic components to fail.

Medical ID dog tags

The military issues red aluminum dog tags to those with certain medical conditions. These are in addition to the stainless steel tags issued to every soldier. The aluminum tags are slightly larger than the standard issue dog tags and require a slight adjustment on our machines to emboss them. Unfortunately we no longer sell them. The demand for them was not enough to justify the time necessary to adjust our embossers.

Bulk Dog Tags make great tickets

If you are looking for a unique "ticket" to your event you should try our bulk dog tags. We have had several bar/restaurants order dog tags with sequential numbering for their special invite only events. Some local bands have given them out to their fans so they can get in the venue at a discounted price next time they play. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination. Dog tags are sturdy and difficult to duplicate unless you have an actual machine or go through the time and expense of ordering them online.

Honoring Veterans on Memorial Day

Have you ever driven by a cemetery on Memorial Day and noticed the sea of US flags on the grave markers? I never gave it much thought until I ran into to someone that volunteers to place the flags at each veterans grave. I just assumed that the cemetery staff was responsible but the fact is that it would be an impossible task at many cemeteries. One of the cemeteries in the city has 15,000 veterans needing flags. Its just food for thought if you are looking to honor veterans on Memorial Day. Maybe next year we can call our local cemetery and see if they need help with the flags.

Duplicating dog tags

From time to time we get emails from customers after they receive their dog tags concerned that our tags do not look like the ones they were issued. We are careful to post large, sharp and accurate photos on our website of what our tags look like. Over the years tags have been made using many different models of machines and some operate differently than others. Tags have been made with the rolled edge up and some with the rolled edge down. Some with the hole on the left and others with the hole on the right. The biggest point of contention though is the text. The modern standard is raised text which is called embossed. Older machines used sunken or debossed text. When the military purchases new machines however they do not scrap all of the old ones. Many of these machines are very rugged and last for decades. That is why we still get the occasional Guard or Reservist soldier asking why the tags we sent them have raised text. Their units still use older machines. Your best bet is to look at the photos closely because not all dog tags were made alike.

Do you guys make the actual tag?

We are the embossers. We take your text and put it on the tag using our embossing machines. We purchase blanks from one of several manufacturers who make the blanks for the military. There are no machines that take a piece of metal, cut out the dog tag shape and them emboss the letters. They are two completely separate processes.

Black Dog Tags

Black dog tags are favored by some special ops units because of the reduced glare. However, we no longer carry them because of the problems with the black finish flaking off. The black tags most commonly sold are made using black powder coating. The problem is that as the tags are embossed, the powder coating is weakened and eventually flakes off. We had a couple of soldiers tell us that they simply spray painted their tags or just duct taped over them.

Are dog tags good for dogs?

Dog tags look great on a big, strong dog like a German Shepard, no doubt about it. The tags measure 2" x 1 1/8" so they are ideally suited for larger dogs. There are 5 lines available and each has 15 characters. That is plenty of room for your dog's name, address and phone number. Why the rolled edge?

While military spec dog tags are quite durable, they are surprisingly thin. Without the rolled edge the edges of the tag would be quite sharp. The rolled edges also add a bit of rigidity to the tags to keep them from bending. Rolled edges came into use during the WWII era and allowed for a much lighter, thinner dog tag that could be embossed instead of engraved. The embossing let a much deeper and easier to read mark on the tag.

As usual for this time of year, bible camps are gearing up for the summer. We have started receiving bulk orders for dog tags embossed with various bible verses. While it only takes us 2-3 days to fill the bulk orders it is always better to plan ahead. Our custom design tags have become a popular alternative because of the full color capability. For these though you definitely have to plan ahead because we need about 3 weeks to get them to you.
